Geocache Description:

An interesting look at a mining machine

After they shut down Power works they took the Loco away so this is the replacement cache.
This dredger was in service at the Hazelwood Mine and was moved here about 14 yraes ago after being decomisioned.

Dr21 was the sister to Dr3 that was at Yallourn Mine and now has her Bucketwheel futher up the hill.
Dr21 has a unique thrusting bucket wheel boom. When the boom extends the conter weight moved to balance the machine.
These machines rely so much on balance. When they decommison them they drop them to the ground by placing a small explocive charge on the winch ropes which when broken results in a crumples pile of twisted steel on the ground.
If we are not carful this dredger will end up that way. The Friends of Dr21are seeking funding to maintain it and have had the dredger listed witht he national trust.
I did not operate Dr21 but I did maintain the fire fighting equipment that was on it when it was in service.

The cache is in an easy place to find that is wheelchair accesable.
