It seems that we, as humans, are ironically preoccupied with the concept of simplicity. We strive for an uncomplicated “simple life”. Lao Tzu is quoted as having remarked “I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures.” Confuscius once said “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” Albert Einstein may have said “If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself.” Even Lynyrd Skynyrd tells us that Mama wants us to live like a “simple kind of man.” As great as all these quotes look on paper, everyone knows that real life is incredibly complicated. The computer or smartphone that you are reading this page on is composed of an assortment of circuits, each of which is part of a bigger circuit, and in turn an even bigger circuit that is important to the overall function of the system. Your own body at its most basic level is composed of pathways of enzyme reactions, that build up larger pathways of reactions, that produce bigger pathways, and all these pathways communicate among themselves to make you function.
