Henry Coe State Park doesn't get many visitors considering its enormous size, so the less popular trails can fall into disrepair. Eagle Pines Trail is one of those trails.
Any Henry Coe map will show Eagle Pines Trail starting from an unmarked junction off Willow Ridge Road (there is a helpful cache at the junction) which passes below Eagle Pines Peak before ending on the largest piece of private property in Henry Coe State Park.
The old jeep road starts out a little rough and is hard to see, but gets easier just beyond Eagle Pines Peak, which is the exact opposite of what one might expect. The views from the ridge along the way are spectacular and you'll have the place to yourself. On a topographical map, this is the "real" Willow Ridge, with the cache located near the "W". On the latest Coe map, it looks more like a northern spur of Willow Ridge.
The cache is an ammo box located 10 ft from the edge of private property ("barely legal"), about 0.75 miles from Eagle Pines Peak, and less than 10 ft from the trail. The property border is easy to spot once you get there (see picture). The unprepared might try to reach the cache from Arnold Horse Ranch, but that would be unwise. You'll get a great view of the large section of private property--seems like they are doing something in the valley far below--what could it be?
Went to the store the night before to get something "eagle" themed, but came up empty. The ammo can contains only an Angry Bird log book ('cause eagles are angry) and a science project: a box of yellow (eagle) peeps. Let's see how they handle the Coe heat over time--please take a picture!
If you like hiking as much as caching (or more!), be sure to visit all the caches in the Hardcore Hiker series. Perhaps you'll show up on the list of those who have found caches in the series. Are you hardcore?
