Geocache Description:

Cache # 123.

I noticed this sign on the road near Benalla on the way to Samaria.  The Globe Hotel operated from 1886 - 1920.  It was owned by Mrs A Cain.  Unfortunately there is little to be seen except this large sign.  It has been difficult to find any history of the Hotel but I have found an interesting snippet in a 1944 newspaper.

The Benalla Ensign Friday 22 September 1944

"Coming of Age Party to Twins

Friends gather at old landmark

One of the oldest landmarks in the district, the de-licensed Globe Hotel ................when a coming of age party was tendered for Gunner Richard Gardiner (who had recently returned from New Guinea) and his sister Miss Audrey Gardiner."

The Globe Hotel in 1944 was owned by Herb Ford (their uncle)  who had recently purchased it from the Cain Family.  From the newspaper article it appears that the building was intact and the interior relatively well-preserved.

Older residents at that gathering that evening reminisced that this landmark had been the meeting place for pioneers when bullock wagons were the only means of transporting heavy goods.

I cannot find any reference to the building after 1944.

The cache is micro in size and contains a log only.  Please bring your own PEN.  Please replace carefully.
