Geocache Description:

NALMC

Working Together Across Our Stone Walls

If you intend to use the trail system, please be aware, the land owner requests you stay on the trails. Please respect their request.

I accidentally happend upon this Trail System while taking a drive to see if there was access to some other caches on Mountain road, but soon found out that Mountain Road, is really and old dirt road that has been converted to a snowmobile trail.

NALMC (Northwood Area Land Management Collaborative) is an informal group of locals in and around the town of Northwood, NH working together to connect neighbors to the land and to each other, through an appreciation of the natural world.

NALMC Built & mantains the 5-mile NALMC hiking trail connecting pulic and private lands and maintains an informational kiosk in the heart of the NALMC neighborhood along the NALMC trail. They Conduct and sponsor workshops on natural resource topics of local interest, host seasonally themed potluck get-togethers such as the maple sugaring event, co-sponsored the 1st New England Aldo Leopold Day in 2011 & organized the 1st community-wide outdoor 'Discovery Day' at Northwood Meadows State Park in 2009.

By working together across property boundaries, NALMC promotes science-based land stewardship with many of the same values as Aldo Leopold's Land Ethic. NALMC hopes to serve as a model for others, encouraging 'neighborhoods' throughout the state and beyond to work across boundaries on collaborative, voluntary and community-based stewardship.

The origins of NALMC date back to September 2006 when Carl Wallman, owner of Harmony Hill Farm met the State Lands Biologist for NH Fish & Game, Jim Oehler. In short, Carl wanted to coordinate with Jim to ensure that the wildlife habitat improvements that he was implementing on Harmony Hill Farm complimented the habitats on the adjoining Northwood Meadows State Park and Forest Peters Wildlife Management Area. Carl understood that, as far as the local wildlife was concerned, his land was not an island unto itself, that wildlife travel across property boundaries, and that few species could be fully supported by the habitats provided on his land alone.

Carl, Jim, and UNH Cooperative Extension Forester, Matt Tarr met and decidied to try to take the concept of collaborative management further by trying to engage other landowners in the surrounding area to develop a model of collaborative management. Currently, the landowners engaged in NALMC include:

  • Harmony Hill Farm
  • NH Fish & Game Department (Forest Peters WMA)
  • NH Dept. of Resources & Economic Development (Northwood Meadows State Park)
  • Northwood Conservation Commission (numerous parcels in the NALMC area)
  • UNH Woodlands & Natural Areas Program (Saddleback Mountain)
  • Coe-Brown Academy
  • Other Private Landowners including Jeff Lalish and Greg Pitman

The group meets periodically to identify opportunities to collaborate on improving wildlife habitat, outdoor recreational opportunities, and forest and water resources in the NALMC neighborhood.

Below you will find links to the trail map, trail mileage and trail notes. PLEASE NOTE: Some parts of the trails DO NOT allow horses or bicycles. Please be sure to check the map!

The cache is a small wateproof matchstick container containing the log book only. Please be sure to bring something to write with.

Please re-hide the container as found.

Congrats goes to bubblishus for the FTF!
