Geocache Description:

This is a popular walking/cycling trail and it is maintained for snow-mobiles in the winter. I hid an ammo can cache here to highlight this beautiful trail along the Contoocook River.

A small parking area is available near the entrance to the Peterborough Recycling Center on Scott Mitchell Rd. There also is more parking at the intersection of Route 202N and Scott Mitchell Rd.  The Common Pathway map in Peterborough, NH.

The Contoocook River valley through which the Peterborough & Hillsborough Railroad passed formed a natural division between the manufacturing region of New Hampshire and the predominantly farm-based economy to the west. The Peterborough & Hillsborough line opened in July 1878 and regularly carried passengers until the late 1920’s and then continued with only freight. On March 13, 1936 a storm damaged sections of the line south of Elmwood (Hancock) and freight service was never resumed. This section of line was abandoned in 1942. The state of NH bought the right-of-way in 1985 and the town of Peterborough now maintains this former railroad bed as the Common Pathway trail.

B&M used Mogul engines to run the freight trains

This Mogul engine was one of the types of engines that would have been used for the freight trains.
