Geocache Description:

The river Kettős-Körös breached its bank in 28 July 1980 6:35 AM between Békés and Köröstarcsa, flooding the nearby area. The width of the gap in the bank was 71m long; the gushing water washed 60.000 m3 of ground away. The right bank of the Kettős-Körös was affected nearby the river pumping station of Hosszúfok.

The banks of the Kettős-Körös were built between 1855 and 1869 as part of the flood-protection works in the Körös-völgy area. These banks were strengthened between 1879 and 1894 and also after the floods in 1919.

Immediately after the event, local authorities started the evacuation and salvaging of goods from the areas with risk of flood of Békés, Tarhos, Mezőberény and Doboz. The reconstruction works on the bank was completed between September and October 1980.

A memorial monument is standing on the site of the disaster, close to the cache.
