Todos sabem quem foi, ou pelo menos já ouviram falar em Sherlock Holmes, mas poucos sabem que foi o seu criador.
É curioso que, frequentemente, os seguidores de um personagem de ficção ignorem a figura do seu autor.
Muitas vezes, o único mérito que atribuímos a um autor resume-se ao fato de ter criado um mito, cujas aventuras partilhamos e limitamos a sua vida e os seus méritos à criação do nosso personagem preferido, deixando de lado as suas restantes facetas, embora tenham tanta ou mais importância e sejam, em muitos casos, ilustrativas do porquê, como e quando nasceu o personagem
No caso de Sir Arthur Conan Doyle essa falta é flagrante: centenas de milhares de fanáticos admiradores de Sherlock Holmes, espalhados pelo mundo, prestam culto ao personagem, esquecendo o criador e as suas outras interessantes atividades como historiador, jornalista, médico, grande desportista e um dos importantes impulsionadores do espiritismo, como alternativa de existência de vida depois da morte.
Desde o seu aparecimento, surgiram, por toda a parte, inúmeras sociedades Holmesianas que chegaram até aos nossos dias, analisando e dissecando os mais insignificantes pormenores da vida e dos hábitos do famoso detetive.
Mostram um fervor capaz de obrigar o autor a ressuscita-lo quando, farto dele, o despenhara pelos precipícios de Reichenbach (Suiça) juntamente com o seu principal adversário, o malvado professor Moriarty, porque o pobre Sir Arthur estava desejoso de se dedicar a tarefas mais gratificantes embora, indubitavelmente, de muito menos eco popular e retorno financeiro.
Quem era ele para decidir sobre a morte do admirado Sherlock Holmes? Apenas o seu pai e criador!
Foi posteriormente “obrigado” pela legião de fãs do detetive a retomar as aventuras do hábil, subtil, por vezes irónico, mas sempre condescendente Sherlock Holmes para satisfação de todos.
Inicialmente o doutor Watson narra o encontro de ambos, chamando-lhe Sherrinford, mas uma decisão posterior do autor, seguindo o conselho da esposa, preocupada com um nome tão pouco comum, fez com que o detetive fosse batizado definitivamente como Sherlock.
O autor estudou em Stonyhurst, uma antiga mansão medieval que haveria de inspirá-lo para o cenário de um dos seus mais famosos relatos, “O cão dos Baskerville”.
A primeira esposa de Doyle, Louise Hawkins, foi provavelmente a pessoa que o inspirou para criar a doce e compreensiva senhoria “Miss Watson”.
O famoso detetive surgiu pela primeira vez no natal de 1887, no almanaque literário “Beeton’s Christmas Annual” com o caso “A Study in Scarlet”.
No ecrã foram inúmeros os atores que vestiram a pela de Sherlock Holmes, mas dois ficam para sempre na memória “Basil Rathbone” e nas décadas de 80 e 90 do século XX o incontornável “Jeremy Brett”.
