Immigrants, mainly from England and Finland, arrived to live in the brand new town with their families, the first workers as the mill was completed and swung into production. They became very close-knit, sharing social occassions and pulling together to establish their town. Their shops were basic but most needs were available.
Just think about food shopping in the 50s. We can still remember the price of some children's shopping. A topsy was just six pence, a lollipop just one penny, a big bag (45) of aniseed balls just nine pence, a drink just eight pence and bread just 7 pence a loaf.
Times have changed a bit, and so has the old shop building. It now houses the local Judo Club and will hopefully be restored soon for its historical value. OK, it isn't so old, but it is to Kawerau!!
