This rugged little cove at the village of Bay View was once home to the Cape Ann Granite Company (later owned by the Rockport Granite Co.). Along with cut stone and paving blocks, Bay View quarrymen also produced polished granite and large stone sculptures during the granite industry's 100 year span from the 1830's till the 1930's. Some of which adorned the countries most magnificent buildings and parks. There was a steam railroad here where the engine POLYPHEMUS hauled the stone down from the nearby quarries to the wharf. Large teams of oxen were also used. After the decline of the quarry industry the CONSOLIDATED LOBSTER CO. operated at the end of the wharf until the early 60's. It was at the time one of the biggest producers of lobsters in the world. It owned several lobster smacks that would run between here and many ports in Maine and Nova Scotia. The lobsters were then packed here in ice and transported to the Boston & Maine Railroad and shipped to cities in the Northeast USA. The old Consolidated building now is home to the University of Massachussetts were scientific reseach is done on various seafoods. The cache is a small container with some trading items. DO NOT DRIVE OR WALK THROUGH THE GATE. There is a small parking area outside the gate. Walk up the sidewalk to the right 10 yards or so and take the path. There are some historic photographs in the gallery for your viewing. PLEASE DONT LEAVE COMMENT AND PHOTO SPOILERS, Thanks.......Enjoy!
