Geocache Description:

This cache is a small watertight container and and contains only the cache log. Bring your own pen or pencil.

King Philip's War, sometimes called the First Indian War, Metacom's War, or Metacom's Rebellion, was an armed conflict between the Native American inhabitants of present-day New England and English colonists and their Native American allies in 1675–78. The war is named after the main leader of the Native American side, Metacomet, known to the English as "King Philip". The conflict was the single greatest calamity to occur in seventeenth-century Puritan New England. In the space of little more than a year, twelve of the region's towns were destroyed, the areas economy was all but ruined, and much of its population was killed, including one-tenth of all men available for military service.

The war came to Newechewannick (present day Berwick, ME) in October 1675. After several smaller raids, the Abenaki attacked the Tozer home/garrison (located on the west side of present day RT 236 approximately 0.6 miles north of the railroad tracks) on 16 October, killing Richard Tozer and his son. LT Roger Plaisted, in command of a nearby garrison (located on the west side of RT 236 about 0.2 miles north of the railroad tracks), sent seven men to rescue the Tozer family. This group was ambushed, with two killed and the remainder barely making it back to the garrison. The following day LT Plaisted led a party of 20 men to locate and bury the dead. This group was subsequently ambushed by approximately 150 Abenaki and LT Plaisted and three others (including two of Lt Plaisted's sons) were killed.

This cache is placed near a marker designating where LT Plaisted and one of his sons were killed.
