Geocache Description:

Welcome to our 5th cache hide!

We love this native section of the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens and often use the walking tracks. It is at times home to numerous Eltham Copper Butterflies. Please take care where you step when off the walking tracks as there is a wide variety of plants, including Bursaria spinosa

"The life cycle of the butterfly includes an intimate and obligatory association with ants of the genus Notoncus and a dwarfed form of the shrub Bursaria spinosa (Sweet Bursaria). The butterflies have not been found in areas where Notoncus ant colonies do not occur. Adults lay their eggs on the roots of Bursaria spinosa. Once the eggs hatch, the caterpillars are guarded by the ants, which lead them to and from the ant colony to browse on the Sweet Bursaria leaves. In return, the ants feed on sugar secretions which are exuded from the caterpillars' bodies." (DSE)

The best place to park if coming by car is at the point where Froomes Rd merges into Mary St. S37 2.906 E144 12.813

You are looking for a small Sistema with log, pen (working ok at last check, but might want to bring you own) and a few small swaps.

PLEASE make sure to tightly ziplock the log in its own bag, then put that and pen into the other ziplock bag. It tends to get moist here. Enjoy!
