Geocache Description:

This cache is located in Smithfield Historic Cemetery #50, the Samuel Winsor Lot, on West Prospect Street in Greenville, just off Putnam Pike (Route 44).  It is a 50 x 100 foot lot enclosed by a stone wall.  Street parking is available in the quiet residential neighborhood.

The cemetery is well-kept with flowering plants and plantings, trees, and a bench.  Stones are dated from 1776 to 1938 and include William Winsor, a famous name in Smithfield, the namesake of one of the town’s four elementary schools.

Some History:  The Town of Smithfield was named after John Smith, “The Miller,” who was granted land by Roger Williams. Smith was one of the original party of six men headed by Roger Williams that formed the first settlement in Rhode Island.

William Winsor was born in Greenville, RI in 1819. He was a direct descendent of some of the first purchasers of Providence County from the Indians.  William Winsor taught school for a short time and then tried other occupations. He had a very long career of over fifty years as a cashier for the National Exchange Bank in Greenville. Mr. Winsor also served for over thirty years as Town Treasurer, and was the Treasurer of the Smithfield Savings Bank from its establishment in 1872 until his death. Throughout his life, Mr. Winsor was interested in education.  A new school was built in Greenville in 1930, on Putnam Pike. The Parent-Teacher Association petitioned the Smithfield School Committee to name the new school William Winsor Memorial School. They wanted to honor a man who had given so much in service to the town of Greenville.

A dog, “Nobby”, also has been buried here and has a stone at this cemetery.

The cache is a regular lock and lock with camouflage on the sides.  Access from within the cemetery is recommended.  No stones need to be removed to see the cache, simply careful observation.  One "guard stone" will need to be shifted to access the cache. Please replace carefully as found.

 Trackables welcome!
