Geocache Description:

Edessa waterfalls

This cache will show you a famous Greek watefalls in Edessa. You will be amazed by the strenght of the river, rolling through the Edessa city and toppling down from the high of 70 meters. Rainbow and water mist constantly rise above the place, where abundant water fall from the high rocks, and noisiness of the falling water overrides all other sounds...

Edessa city

Edessa waterfalls are the main attraction of the town of Edessa, 80 km west of Thessaloniki. Set on an escarpment high above the plains it not only affords extensive views but the main river Karanos (the Great Waterfall) falls of the escarpment creating a nice micro climate.

However, the waterfalls of Edessa didn't use to be the same as they are now. Until the end of the 14th century the main volume of the water was held in a small lake in the west of the town. Then the waters (perhaps after a geologic or weather phenomenon) directed to the town and fall from its rock, as a result creating many small rivers and at the same time the lake from where they were from came to an end.

Many interesting events and stories are connected to the waterfalls… During the WWS, each morning a sergeant of the Gestapo called Fritz blocked the ways to the square of the city, took away the identity cards of the men and if they wanted to get them back they had to give a hand at the work-site at the waterfalls. In such “manner” in summer 1942, two swimming pools, parterres, flower-stands sprong out of nowhere.

The Karanos waterfall

After the end of the war, the place was given to the municipality of Edessa and the gardeners looked after it, planted in it many flowers and trees. Then the civil war broke out and the waterfalls were forgotten for same time, except the farmers of "Loggos" district who enjoyed having their bath there. 1953 was a turning point when a restaurant was finished and opened with the name "PISINES"(=pools) where the people of Edessa could celebrate and enjoy themselves dancing valse, tangos, mambo and jazz.

Today the waterfalls are a well-known site for their immense beauty for whole Greece. Anyone can safely admire the big waterfall named "KARANOS" and the double's. The water falls from 70 meters height and there is a small cave under the rock.

The whole area has been upgraded and offers many facilities to the tourists. Many other attractions can be visited around. An Open-air Water Museum (Industrial Museum with watermills - factories), a terrarium, a beautiful park, just you choose.

Behind the waterfall

The cache is a 150 ml baby food glass jar.

How to get there: Edessa is roughly 100km west northwest of Thessaloniki in the Pella Prefecture of Macedonia in Northern Greece. It takes about 90 minutes to get there from Thessaloniki while driving along Hwy 2 for most of the way. When you arrive to Edessa, plenty of signs lead to the waterfalls so you can get fairly close to the falls. Many parking places are offered around.

Around the waterfalls the GPS signal is poor, therefore use the hint and the spoiler photo!!!
