Geocache Description:

YOU ARE STANDING ON LAWSONVILLE RUNWAY 80 RIGHT!

Yes, it's true, you are standing on old Runway 80 Right. Hard to believe that there was once a big airport right here--Lawsonville Aero-Center. At one point, there were dozens of DC-3's waiting in line to take off. Of course, that was before there were "jetways," or anything like that. The people had to walk out to the DC-3 to board.

As a boy, I grew up here. Most people don't realize this entire area was formerly called, "Lawsonville," named after my great-grandfather, Hiram Lawson. He was the first magistrate of the budding town, and later became Mayor. I went to Lawsonville High School, shown here. I wasn't much of a student, but I did do well in slide-rule class. I also played the clarinet in the marching band.

As you can see from the size of the high school, this town was very large. In fact, at one time, it was the third largest city in all of California! Sadly, due to freeway re-alignment, Lawsonville quickly faded into history. Well, I still have fond memories of this nice town.

There were a few exciting moments in Lawsonville history. You can see here a picture that my grandfather took, of President Herbert Hoover (on the left). The president was flying in to inspect Anderson Dam. That's my great-grandfater, Hiram Lawson, on the far right. At the time, he was mayor of Lawsonville.

One day, when I was playing near the airport, I saw something funny at the base of a little tree. I asked my grandfather what it was, and he responded: "Don't touch it little Basso. Someday, a stranger will go looking for it, and we don't want to disappoint him." Well, I didn't understand what he meant. Can you find that strange object?
