The Botanical Garden of Szeged is a popular place in the town for spending free-time. It was founded by Professor István Győrffy after the first world war. One thousand kind of trees and shrubs are nurtured here, the garden presents them in geographical units. The most enticing plants are the pine collection of the garden. The most beautiful part of the garden is the lake with water lillies and the Indian lotus which covers the whole surface of the lake with its enormous leaves and opening flowers in July. Next to the big lake we find a smaller lake, a rock-garden and a rosarium with 120 kind of roses. We can also see lots of cactuses, palm trees in hothouses and orchids. The Observatory of the University of Szeged stands in the edge of the botanical garden. It was built in 1991-1992. The place is optimal for the building, because the city lights ar strong only in the north-west. Besides teching, international-standard research works are done in the observatory. It can be visited in Friday evenings (summer open hours: 19-21, winter open hours: 18-21).
