Once upon a time there was a main county-road of 36 kms length across Zselic hilly country, the Old Stage Coach Road. What is to say you can find its contiguous sections also today those are town and village streets, asphalt-covered roads and mostly field and forest cartroads.
Before building of today No67 highway it was the most frequented route between Kaposvár and Szigetvár (from the beginning of the 18th century up to second half of the 19th century).
What is interesting in connection with this route? This route is approximately a straight one, although it passes through hilly country, in addition you find no bridges. The explanation of this fact is that this route passes from beginning to ending on watersheds (drainage divides). The topography of Zselic features long hill-ridges those are about the same height.
A couple of million years ago the giant Pannon-lake (it was situated in the whole Carpathian-basin) was filled up with clayey alluvian deposits and a plain came in existence. This plain got elevated later to 200-300 m height and a low plateau came in existence. Te water-erosion long, narrow walleys deepened into the plateau. The ramained parts are the narrow, steep side hills of the approximately same heights with horizontal ridges. These ridges lead you in case you go along this route.
The legend of Old Stage Coach Road
This wooded area was a haunt of highwaymen in the 18th-19th century. Many legends have survived about the outlaws. One of these is the legend of the Stage Coach Road as it follows.
„A long time ago there was no road through the woods. This countryside was best known by the outlaws who lived in the forests. A condemned outlaw showed the shortest path between the two cities and therefore he released from prison.”
