AQUACOSTA:
Een uniek kunstwerk op een unieke plek!
Fabrice Hund is een Amsterdamse kunstenaar die schilderijen,
tekeningen, sculpturen en (mega-)mozaieken maakt.
Aquacosta is Hund's (5e) mega-mozaiek in openbare ruimte.
Het werd op 23 november 2013 onthuld op de buitenmuur van Badhuis/Sauna Da Costa,
aan de Da Costakade in Amsterdam.
Het mozaïek is opgebouwd uit vele duizenden scherven glas,
tegeltjes, steentjes, knikkers...
De kunstenaar en zijn vriendin hebben er 2 volledige maanden hieraan gewerkt.
Het mozaïek biedt een kleurrijke fantasie aan badrituelen,
een verrijking van de voorheen wat kleurloze gevel van dit pand!
Het kunstwerk is geïnitieerd en mede gefinancierd, door Stichting Da Costa,
in nauwe samenwerking met buurtbewoners en diverse gemeentelijke instanties.
Het pand achter de versierde muur huisvest een bijzonder bedrijfje:
Het laatste openbaar toegankelijke badhuis van Amsterdam,
en misschien wel van Nederland!
Badhuizen ontstonden overal in de stad in een periode dat
douche- en badvoorzieningen in de eigen woning nog geen gemeengoed waren.
Laagdrempelig en betaalbaar boden de badhuizen toch de mogelijkheid
regelmatig een “stortbad” of “kuipbad” te nemen.
De meeste badhuizen in de stad zijn intussen getransformeerd.
Zo heb je bijvoorbeeld een horecavoorziening (Javaplein), een cultureel centrum (BadCuyp)
of zelfs een brouwerij ('t IJ, waar het bier wordt gebrouwen in de oude koperen stookketels).
Het Da Costabadhuis kon 20 jaar geleden, mede door het exploiteren van een sauna,
toch een doorstart maken na aanvankelijke dreiging met sluiting.
De Stichting draait vrijwel volledig op de inzet van vrijwilligers.
Ook vandaag doet het badhuis nog ruimschoots dienst als basisvoorziening voor buurtbewoners.
Tevens vervult de voorziening een sociale functie voor bezoekers en vrijwilligers.

A unique piece of art at a unique spot!
Fabrice Hund is an artist from Amsterdam,
creating paintings, drawings, sculptures and (mega) mozaics.
Aquacosta is Hund's (5th) mega mozaic in public space.
It was presented on 23 november 2013 On the outside wall of Bathhouse/Sauna Da Costa,
on the Da Costakade in Amsterdam.
The mozaic is made up from thousands of pieces of glass ,
tiles, stones and marbles...
It took the artist and his girlfriend 2 whole months to create it.
This mozaïc shows a colorful fantasy in bathing rituals,
a real boost for the façade of the building!
The piece of art is initiated and partly financed by the Da Costa Foundation,
in close cooperation with neighbours and municipal organs.
The building behind this colorful wall has a special company:
It is the last public bathing house is Amsterdam,
maybe even in the Netherlands!
Bathing houses were established everywhere in the city during the period that
bathsand shower facilities in people’s residences were not common.
For a reasonable fare, bath houses offered the opportunity
to get a regular “stortbad” or “kuipbad”.
Most bath houses in Amsterdam transformed in the past decades.
There are, for instance, cafes (Javaplein), cultural centers (BadCuyp)
And even a brewery ('t IJ, where the beer is made in the cupper boiling kettles).
The Da Costa bath house was saved for closing 20 years ago
when a sauna was incorporated in the company.
The Foundation is almost totally runned by volunteers.
Nowadays, the bath house has a central function in the neighbourhood.
It has a social function for visitors and volunteers.
