A year and a half ago, a friend of mine was doing trail work in Belmont and found an abandoned ammo box geocache. A quick search found it was the first version of Grace's 9th Birthday. I wrote the cache owner, but never heard back. The original cache was placed in 2005, which means it's Grace's 18th Birthday this year. Time to celebrate with a geocache!
The cache is the recycled ammo box, placed within easy reach of the trail. Along the way, you will enjoy nice views and plenty of other caches. I didn't know what Grace would like for her 18th birthday, so the cache has all sorts of random things, including a light saber, a glowing pen, and two geocoins.
This cache barely qualifies as "Hardcore Hiker", but liked the remoteness of the location--it's on the SW edge of the park. Recommend starting from the Tarwater trailhead and taking the Butano Ridge Loop (plus the spur to this cache) to get your money's worth.
If you like hiking as much as caching (or more!), be sure to visit all the caches in the Hardcore Hiker series. Perhaps you'll show up on the list of those who have found caches in the series. Are you hardcore?
