Geocache Description:

Gomersal has had quite a number of places of worship, given the relatively small size of its population, over the years, with seven different locations in the village being used in living memory. This cache celebrates one of them: The Church Of St. Mary The Blessed Virgin, known locally as St. Mary's.

The Church Of St. Mary The Blessed Virgin

St Mary's Church was built in 1851 by John Dobson of Leeds at a cost of £3000. It has a neo-Gothic Tower and steeply roofed nave. In 1865 it was enlarged at a cost of £1000 and enlarged again in 1882 for a further £1000. Built of decorated stone, it consists of a chancel, nave, aisles and an embattled western tower containing a dock and one bell.

It was completely refurbished internally in 2003 and as a consequence is "a superb warm modern building for the exceptionally good and meaningful worship which takes place on Sundays and midweek."

Gomersal was the home of Charlotte Bronte's great friend Mary Taylor. Mary inspired the character Rose Yorke in Charlotte’s novel Shirley which featured the famous attack by the Luddites on Rawfold's Mill in the neighbouring village of Liversedge in 1812. Mary is buried in St Mary’s Churchyard.
