Geocache Description:

A camera cache located next to a floating bog. Bring bug spray.

This cache is located in a state owned forest of 1445 acres. For more information about the park, pamphlets are available at the headquarters (43° 08.280N 71° 54.768W) 309 Center road.

A map in pdf form is available under the Trails link.

The cache is located near Mud Pond Bog, a floating bog, located east of the headquarters. The cache itself is located near a boardwalk offering visitors access to a wide array of unusual plants such as the carnivorous (meat eating) pitcher plant. There are a several approaches to the cache but if you have the time we recommend using the Ridge Trail. Starting at the Park headquarters this trail will take you through Virgin Forest and past an abandoned beaver pond before you reach the bog area. (see clue for the shortest way) The bog was formed by a glacial depression about 12,500 years ago. There is 21 feet of sphagnum moss (peat) floating on this body of water. The boardwalk provides access to the mass of moss. If it is bug season, don't forget bug spray.

If you are here for the day the lands also contain:

Black Gum Swamp - This swamp has the oldest trees on the forest (400 years+). Black Gum trees are uncommon and present a curious form.

Virgin Forest - This small stand of eastern hemlock trees was one of the reasons Miss Fox chose to purchase the property in 1907. These trees are approximately 200 years of age!

Munroe Hill Tower - A short tower on Munroe Hill providing views of Mt. Monadnock and the Hillsborough area.

About two miles up the road from the Headquarters building is the old center of town. (43 08.806N 71 56.149) There are many buildings from the 1800's, an old cemetery, one room schoolhouse and the old town pound. It is worth the short drive around before you depart.

If it is a hot summer day there is a swimming hole at (43° 07.215N 71° 55.920W) or the town beach at (43° 06.408N 71° 57.055W) Check out the inside cover of the log to find another cool spot to swim or just check out the scenery.

There are now caches at the swimming hole and the cool spot to swim. Difficulty lowered to allow non-premium members to find it with the new app
