Geocache Description:

This is one in a series of caches I have placed on the seawall in Dymchurch. It is a great place for walking and cycling.

For more information on the seawall please look at my Martello Cache.

This Hawthorne Cache is named after the thorn trees used to make the original seawall. Hawthorne was thought to be impervious to water and a huge amount was needed to maintain the wall. Bundles of hawthorn were called faggots. It was compulsory for landowners to grow the trees and an offence to cut them without permission. The punishment for this offence was having an ear cut off! Today the lanes of Romney Marsh are lined with Hawthorne trees.
