Geocache Description:

Please take note of the difficulty rating for this cache.  This is not a simple park-and-grab, and many muggles may often spend hours in this location, making it likely that you will not be able to retrieve this cache without being observed.  If you were unable to find the cache due to the presence of others, we would appreciate you making a "write note" to that effect rather than listing it as a DNF.  A DNF denotes there may be a problem with the cache, and a lot of muggles around is not a problem with the cache; it is a problem with the timing of attempting to find the cache.  There is not a "great time" nor "great weather" to find this cache as the whims of fishermen are more challenging to understand than quantum physics.

A quick note to say that this is a new cache and replacement cache for "Dog-gone...Ships of Bass Strait". Unfortunately this cache could not be re-instated as the old cache (even though it was a Traditional) resembled a Virtual type of cache requiring a photograph only. This type of cache is no longer valid in Geocaching.

Therefore I have decided to re-do this cache differently and give cachers another great reason to come out here.

Many thanks & appreciation to Dog-gone for this opportunity for allowing another cache out here on this pier and here's to the original cache.

Ship Spotters #7 Ripping View

Number 7 in the Ship Spotter series brings you here to the end of the pier.

An excellent vantage point for watching large ships passing through "the Rip" and also a great spot for fishing A very high muggle area at the best of times so stealth is a must!

The rating is a little higher due to the muggle factor, and also if there are any ships about, then why not take a quick photo and post it here if you can :) Happy caching!

The Heads between Point Lonsdale and Point Nepean serve as the entry to both the Port of Melbourne and Geelong and after passage through the notorious Rip, Port Philip Bay. Many ships have come to grief while passing through this entry into the bay and there are still "close calls" even to this day. The last ship to come to grief due to not having a pilot on board was the Golden Gate Sun in the 1980's which became beached at Shortland's Bluff just off Queenscliff.

Also a great spot for fishing, you can spot the occasional seal playing with the fishermans' catch or just playfully showing off

QE2 leaving the HeadsLady Sandra exiting the HeadsDiver Rip Rescue - Akuna 4 & Victoria Water Police boat also on scene
