Your GPS receiver will bring you to the former Sandhill Lake State School, No. 4797, latterly the Sandhill Lake Hall; and nearby, the disbanded Sandhill Lake Tennis Club. The tattered state of these community facilities mirrors the decline of similar small rural centres across the Mallee as farms have consolidated, populations have declined and modern transport has favoured the larger centres, like Kerang. The building is of unusual construction for this area - of rendered local stone with bricked corners. It has survived quite well, though now is open to the elements (and other agents of decline!). My wife and I had our kitchen tea here and we danced to the famous 'Gay Charmers'. The name suggests how long ago that was. Can you imagine a band using that non-'PC' name these days? Local families gathered at the tennis courts on summer Saturdays to play against neighbouring teams, like Lake Meran.
You will also be close by the Avoca River on the last leg of its journey to Lake Bael Bael and to Sandhill Lake itself, once another recreational and social centre for the district. The lake is not visible from the road, but there's an access track to get you there. If anything, the centre of this district has now shifted south to the gleaming new Sandill Lake fire station on the Quambatook Road.
