However, the north branch of the Pawtuxet River is a wonderful paddle and we were happy to place a cache to join the Kayak to the Spillway series.
Being able to see this part of the town is well worth the trip! You can get fairly close to the earthen dam(3200 feet long by 100 feet high: this dam essentially created the reservoir) on Route 12 if you paddle all the way(this requires a tiny detour to the east from the last Kayak to the Spillway cache, http://coord.info/GC3JTW7 ). The Ponaganset and Moswansicut rivers once met and formed the Pawtuxet in the area that is now flooded by the Scituate Reservoir(the primary drinking water supply for Providence and surrounding towns). Now, the Pawtuxet begins after the Gainer Dam.
Stay away from the dam on your right after you launch. The river is winding and there are dead ends, so please familiarize yourself with a map and/or check satellite images to ensure that you're on the right path.
The Blueways site may be helpful . On your trip to this cache, you shouldn't need to portage and there will be minimal current. Further up the river, you may find a portage or two to be necessary and there could be a bit of current.
A "camouflaged" container(a gift from KATnDOGZ) holding just a log in a bag. It should be within reach of a cacher in a boat. Bring a pen to sign the log. Online logs without a corresponding cache log signature may be deleted. Please only remove the top of the container, leaving the rest in place and removing only the log.
There is NO legal access to this cache via land.
Enjoy the paddle!
