Geocache Description:

Current Owners Note: This is one of the oldest and most popular caches in Newfoundland. The original owner, Aviex, (Alastair Allan & Sherilyn Beaton) placed this iconic geocache here back in June, 2003. This makes it one of the oldest active geocaches in our province. Aviex is no longer able to maintain this one so I have the honor of adopting it in 2020 and carrying on with this cache and keeping it active for many more years to come.

Until I recently found this one myself (before I adopted it), I had no idea of the amount of history that took place just off the shores from this location near the end of the Second world War. The plaques describing the historical meeting are located near the parking area just as you start your short hike to this cache location.

Original cache Note: This is a recommended day out and worth the drive. A fine, stony beach, a little park and a bit of history. A good place for a family picnic. "Where's in a Name" virtual geocache requires a user name to be translated into a latitude or longitude using the telephone keypad code. Kelly, a geocacher from Ohio owns a Meridian (53 55.965) which just touches the shores of Newfoundland at this wave-swept beach. She asked that we visit the Meridian and photograph the GPS, showing the coordinates.

This cache was established to mark the visit, hoping that others will enjoy this lovely place. We had planned on putting the cache exactly on the longitude, but that location was far too close to the sea.

The cache is a 2 L. ice cream tub marked with red stripes. It is buried in a natural, low mound of beach rocks surrounded by flat, grassy ground.

The cache was updated and replaced once again in September, 2020. It is now a camo'd PB jar. Still in the original location as described above.

We didn't know it at the time, but this place is also a memorial to the signature of The Atlantic Charter by Churchill and Roosevelt in 1941, which led to the formation of the United Nations.
