It was October 2004 and a warm wind blew in from Africa. A storm followed and a loose wire on an electricity pole caused a spark, and that was it. Within 24 hours over 60,000 olive trees were burnt to the ground. The village was ruined financially and ecologically. Four brothers met and came up with a plan. From the ashes the Botanical Park of Crete was created.
In September 2014 we came for lunch at the Park to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of our good friends John and Margaret. This cache is dedicated to them and to the family who run the nearby park and restaurant. Our lunch was wonderful and all the ingredients were sourced within a km of the cache site. The family have made some excellent hiking/walking paths through the park for you to enjoy the beautiful cretan countryside. You don't need to enter the Botanical Park as the cache is a park and grab. ** please note the Cretan Runners no longer live on the island so we ask our fellow cachers to maintain this cache. Should this prove difficult the cache will be archived. Thanks for your help.
Happy caching !
