Geocache Description:

This is one of the oldest caches in RI. It was placed in 2002 on top of Battery 211, an overgrown military relic known only to locals as a great place to watch the sunset. In recent years GZ has been transformed into a lovely landscaped overlook with views of Point Judith Lighthouse, the Harbor of Refuge and Block Island. It has become a challenge to keep a cache going here with all the muggle activity, so the new hide is a bit different. Enjoy!

The cache was placed and maintained by Two Sisters for over twelve years. I am honored to continue their legacy. Their original cache description follows: "Set among the overgrowth, rocks and sand. Use care Thorns and Posion Ivy possible in area. There is a lot of hilltop actives this cache is hidden from mugglers, we hope. Marked Box, with notepad and other objects. It's one of the oldest in the area, and is visited often for its view of the sea and lighthouse. We are getting older and would like to pass it along as a way of keeping ourselves forever young."

As you approach GZ you will see the Point Judith Fisherman’s Memorial, “A tribute to Friends Lost” dedicated July 27, 2008. If you come in the early morning you may see fishermen tending floating fish traps just inside the breakwater to the west. In the evening this is still a great place to watch the sunset.

History of the mound: Camp Cronin Fishing Area is the site of a former World War II coastal fort, named Fort Greene (South), part of the Harbor Defenses of Narragansett Bay. Battery 211 was armed with 2 six-inch guns. Gun one was down in front of the fishermen's memorial, and is being undermined by the sea. Gun two was located on the other side of the mound on a line of sight with Point Judith Lighthouse. It now hosts a beautiful work of art in stone. Look to the NW and you will see the dilapidated control station in the distance. It is a concrete bunker that once had a wood frame roof structure built over it to make it look like a seaside cottage.
