As muralhas mais antigas de Caminha datam do século XIII, do reinado de D. Afonso III. No século XIV, D. João I dota a fortaleza de uma segunda linha de muralha. Mas é no século XVII, na sequência das guerras da Restauração, que são construídos os baluartes e torreões da fortaleza. Os muros que delas restam, algumas dezenas de metros de cintura amuralhada, são em parte medievais e em parte setecentistas.
A zona envolvente à Muralha é um dos espaços requalificados da Vila, de grande beleza e valor. Esta requalificação realizada em 2005, foi da responsabilidade da Câmara Municipal.
Todo o espaço é hoje uma zona privilegiada de lazer e um ponto de referência obrigatório para os turistas. Moderna, harmoniosa, respeitando o peso patrimonial de uma muralha de séculos, a envolvente conta presentemente com espaços e traçados retificados, passeios generosos, um espelho de água e espaços verdes. A obra foi combinada com a intervenção na Rua Visconde Sousa Rego, na interseção da qual foi reforçada a componente artística, já que aí se localiza um monumento de homenagem ao pescador.
The oldest walls of Caminha dating from the thirteenth century , the reign of D. Afonso III . In the fourteenth century , John I endows the strength of a second line of wall . But it is in the seventeenth century , following the wars of the Restoration , which are built the ramparts and turrets of the fortress . The walls remain of them , a few dozen meters of walled waist, are part medieval and part of eighteenth century .
The area surrounding the Wall is one of the Village requalified spaces of great beauty and value. This requalification performed in 2005 , was the responsibility of the Municipality .
All the space is now a prime recreation area and an obligatory point of reference for tourists . Modern , harmonious , respecting the equity weight of a wall of centuries , the surrounding areas and currently has rectified tracings , generous sidewalks, a mirror of water and green spaces . The work was combined with the intervention in Rua Visconde Sousa Rego , the intersection of which was enhanced artistic component , since there is located a monument in honor of the fisherman.
