Geocache Description:

Drive from Mamaku on South Rd. Park at the Trailhead. Cache is on a reasonably easy P-shaped track which takes about 40 mins to walk around.

This walk will take you to Lake Rotohokahoka. The reflections on this lake are incredible! Take your camera.

When doing this walk take the 30 minute walk to the lake edge, and carry on to do a complete loop. Another walk to a picnic area is also there but this takes 2 and a half hours, and there is no cache on that one.

Cache is in a small clearing where reception shouldn't be a problem. It is to the left of the track if you have walked past the lake on a clockwise circuit. It is on the right of the track if you are walking the track counter-clockwise by turning right at the only intersection before you get to the lake.

Orignal contents included:

  • Water proof matches
  • Chupa chups
  • Face paint
  • Vodafone keyring
  • Lord of the rings trading card
  • Notebook and pen

While in the area you might like to check out another walk, which starts at S38° 11.239 / E176° 05.584, 700m down the road from the carpark. The walk takes you to a tin hut, and you can also carry on to the picnic area from here as well.

Carpark:
The ground can be a bit soft and water logged, so it pays to park on the side of the road.

For a map and further information, see either pages 43-45 of Rotorua Walking Tracks (PDF) or the DOC's online Mokaihaha Track information page.

If you have a 4WD and are feeling adventurous, West Rd intersects with South Rd at S38° 11.992 / E176° 05.282. It is fun in the dry and probably a 2-vehicle trip with a winch in the wet. However, there is a track starting at S38° 11.569 / E176° 04.384 that will take you to the cache as well. I have not walked this track.
