The remodeled Santa Clara Town Centre started life as the home of a W. T. Grant Co. store. Back in the day, Grant's was a nationwide chain of mid-priced stores somewhere between Sears' and Woolworth's in quality of offerings. The Santa Clara store was quite large and even featured a restaurant. The profits from the store chain provided the endowment for the William T. Grant Foundation. This philanthropic organization still exists, investing in "high-quality research to ensure that young people from diverse backgrounds reach their fullest potential."
When the Grant stores went bankrupt in the mid-1970's the space was taken over by Mervyn's of San Lorenzo, just up the Bay. The shopping center was renamed "Mervyn's Plaza", Mervyn's eventually expanded nationwide but after a succession of owners, it too went bankrupt in December 2008.
After that, the department store space sat empty. Smaller tenants on the west side of the center held on through the years. Redevelopment now brings a Target store and a fresh name to the property. Most of the old center was demolished to make way.
The original "Grant's Tomb" cache (GC2818G) was within a few feet of the building and colored to blend in with the landscaping bark used in the planted area. That spot is buried under a sidewalk now. This is a different container and an easier hide in a new spot with somewhat better GPS reception. Cache is off the paved sidewalk, but is concealed.
Update 12/11/2017 Cache replaced in the same spot with a different and better camo'd container.
Congratulations to not2b and GypsyGearhart for the FTF
