Z is for Zig Zag Road
Z is one of the letters that we are having to 'fudge' a little, as we can't find a place (e.g. Jacobs Well) or feature (e.g. Whitmore common) starting with a Z. In this case we have gone with "Zig Zag Road", made famous when was chosen as the route the Olympic cyclists would take up Box Hill.
Note: The log is to be found within a 30ml sample pot within the 400ml screwtop container. This ia a replacement (on Wed 08 Dec 2021) for a larger container that had leaked, soaking all the contents. However, I am not changing the specified size as this could adversely affect somebody's statistics.
There are many caches on Box Hill, in fact I wasn't sure I could shoehorn another in, so you could make a day of it. For those in more of a hurry, here's a couple of suggestions:-
Pleasant / recommended route
Park at the main car park (see waypoint), free to NT members but the rest of you pay and display. Pick up the track you need at the "Start of track" waypoint and follow it pretty much all the way to GZ. It initially runs at right angles to the cache but soon curls round to the left.
Brutal / short route
Park at the nearer car park (see waypoint), free to everybody. This is very much the shorter route but goes directly up the steep hillside. Aim for the waypointed stile from which it is a short distance to GZ.
Afterwards
Please consider walking the 0.16 miles along to Broadwood Tower, not so much for the cache as for the unique folly, now a bit of a ruin. However, now that the tree growing up the inside has been removed, this is of less interest than it used to be. Still some good views.
