I was born July 2, 1898, graduated from West Point in November, 1918, achieved the rank of Second Lieutenant in 1918 and General in 1955. I parachuted into Normandy on June 6 and entered Holland in 1944. I was acting Commander of the 101st Airborne Division during the siege of Bastogne. When we became surrounded and the Germans demanded our surrender, I sent back a one-word reply "NUTS."
