The town of Sumner, Maine was originally settled by several families from Southeastern Massachusetts in 1782. Known orginally as Butterfield, the town became known as Sumner in the late 1790's. The Sumner cemeteries are a good place for history buffs to check out very old headstones of the foremothers and forefathers who proudly called this area their home. If you day includes hanging around Sumner, there is much more information to be had at the Increase Sumner Library, located in East Sumner village. Note: some of the Sumner cemeteries, although they are open to the public, are actually private property. According to the Sumner Town Office, this is owned & maintained by the town. Please be respectful at all times. Enjoy!
