Geocache Description:

The cache is located along the South Manchester Rail Trail. This part of the abandoned Manchester and Lawrence Railroad is paved and runs parallel to South Willow Street. It's a nice place for a walk or a bike ride. Personally I love the fact that you can see the old rails with nature growing around them. As best as I can tell, the railroad dates back to the mid 1850's with this stretch being abandoned in the 1980's. A few hundred yards to the north, you can visit the site of Fort Stark. There's unfortunately not much to see. There's a marker that mentions the site and a stone well nearby. You can also see a building foundation there. It's said the well dates back to the fort (really a garrison), I can't tell you the history of the foundation. The fort was built under the direction of Lieut. Archibald Stark (father of General John Stark) in 1746 to protect the local population from the local Natives.
