Geocache Description:

What makes a good puzzle cache?

I have been told some people NEVER do puzzle caches and if there is any maths forget it.

A lot of times you get a series of clues and you collect the answers which are either numbers of words which you convert to numbers. The next step usually involves some simple maths in order to generate the cache coordinates.

But is the maths really that simple. Logic is not always easy or straight forward.

Following on from some conversations about the maths in puzzle caches I am now aware of several terms that I had never heard of before.

BOMDAS

BODMAS

PEMDAS

BEDMAS

These are all different acronyms outlining the Order of Mathematical Operations.

No wonder people say maths is hard…….

I found this Simple Math Quiz 7+7/7+7x7-7=? which apparently 92% of people get wrong.

What do you think the answer is?

Well starting at the left and working your way right doing each calculation as you meet it you get fifty six. This is Maths not English so this answer is wrong.

Or do you break it up into 3 separate functions (7+7)/(7+7)x(7-7) → 14/14×0 → 1×0=0

Also incorrect

Maybe it’s  (7+(7/7))+(7x(7-7)) → (7+1)+(7×0) → 8+0=8

Again a wrong answer.

These are the common incorrect answers.

For me it has always been stuff in brackets first followed by multiplication and division before doing the additions and subtractions. I think this is actually BOMDAS though it’s not a term I remember from school.

There is a hierarchy by which the different calculations are performed so seven over seven is one and seven times seven is forty nine giving you 7+1+49-7=50, the correct answer.

Don’t worry there is no maths to be solved to find the coordinates for this cache.

Like everything in life when you already know the answer the question is easy.

This code is the brainchild of a well-known fictional character from the genre of crime fiction. The books by the Scottish author have spawned several films and TV productions. Once you recognise it for what it is a simple google search will give you what you need. BYOP
