Freetown State Forest is a vast tract of public land acquired over a twenty year period, beginning in the 1930's. It is part of the 13,600 acre Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve. Near the main entrance is a day use area with a wading pool, picnic area, fields and restrooms. The remainder of the forest offers 50 miles of unpaved roads and trails. Horseback riders, dog sledders, mountain bikers and seasonal motorcycle and snowmobile users are welcome, as are hunters and anglers in season. Rattlesnake Brook, which meanders throughout much of the property, is stocked with brook trout each spring.
The Massachusetts Star was designed to give geocachers several options for finding. You can hike, bike, snowshoe or cross country ski to every cache. All caches are winter friendly to at least 3 feet. 4X4 and all wheel drive vehicles with high ground clearance, snowmobiles and off-road motorcycles can drive to within 50 feet of at least half of the caches and will have more parking options for the ones you can't drive to. We recommend finding the caches in numerical order.
Please be aware that you will end over 2.5 straight line miles from where you began and have traveled over 8 miles along the way. Plan accordingly. Depending on your mode of travel, expect to spend at least 5 hours and up to 8 or more to complete the star. Cell service is spotty, so let someone know where your going and also bring plenty of water. We suggest you pack a lunch or snacks as well. We also strongly suggest that you bring a trail map and highlight your route. Large trail maps can be found at Forest HQ at the entrance of the park.
