A short time ago two White Pines in Tamworth were measured to see which was the tallest in the state. This was second...therefore "taller" but not "tallest" (the tallest is in, appropriately, Big Pines Natural Area).
Ed Parsons writes a hiking column printed in the Conway Daily Sun. I am often inspired to take a walk or hike on the trails he has described. His column of July 25 had me hunting down this tree and hiding this cache.
From the parking area, hike along the trail. At the first intersection turn right. At the kiosk, you can study the map. You will continue past the kiosk on Heron Pond Trail just a few hundred feet to the Lake Trail on the right. Take this right and proceed to the coordinates. You will pass by the "Taller" pine before reaching the cache. According to Ed's column, the pine is 144 feet tall and has a circumference of 165 inches at chest height. It is close to impossible to see the top of the tree when foliage is on the surrounding trees.
The cache is a bit further down the trail in a different tree, right by the trail.
You can continue down the trail which dead ends on the north shore of Chocorua Lake.
There are many other trails to enjoy on these conserved pieces of land. A very nice place to visit is Heron Pond. Some of the trails a re broad and relatively flat and all are shaded, making for a cool place to hike or walk the dog on a hot summer day.
