Geocache Description:

*** I would like to thank everyone who voted this cache, Wisconsin’s favorite cache for June 2002. To vote for your favorite cache click HERE ***

The cache is under where? That’s right cache fans; this cache is under water, eight feet to be exact. It is in a local lake about 150 yards off shore. It is outside of the swim area, but inside the no wake area. The use of a boat would help find the cache, but you can access it from the county park beach. (Fees do apply to access the park) You can triangulate the approximate location from the shore, or put your GPS in a couple of zip lock bags, and using snorkeling gear, search the area. The cache should be able to be seen from the surface. If memory serves me well this spot does not have much weed growth. If accessing from the beach, you might want to bring along something to disguise the cache while taking the cache ashore. On weekends in the summer the beach can become very busy.

The cache is a 4” PVC pipe about 14” long with a cap glued on one end, and a test plug and chain on the other. Bring items of appropriate size and weight, so not to affect buoyancy. The cache is attached to a 40 pound round block of concrete. A hook protrudes out of the concrete, where the chain from the cache is hooked. It is not necessary to move the block to retrieve the cache. PLEASE DO NOT move the anchor so the coordinates remain accurate. You will need to bring along something that will help you find the cache’s anchor upon returning the cache. A mirror might work on sunny days. If you want to use a float, feel free to bring one. A short cord with a can coozy on one end, and a small loop tied on the other will work.

After retrieving the cache unscrew the wing nut about 3 turns with the nut facing down to remove the plug. It looks like the center of the plug might fill with water. When replacing the cache items put the log book in the container first, then the cache items. (zipper end in first) This will keep the log book up off the bottom where the water will collect if it seeps in. When replacing the plug tighten about 3 to 4 turns. Pull on chain to check that the plug will not slip out. (The chain is attached to the plug.) To replace the cache, just hook the chain onto the hook.

The cache contains the usual.

  • Log book
  • Glitter Silly Putty
  • Nite-Glo Silly Putty
  • Lighted Fan Pen
  • 2 pack of Lindy Little Joe Glow Fuzz-E-Grub
  • Aqua Buzz Travel Bug
  • This and that

Thanks and have fun, but as always, BE SAFE!

I hope you have as much fun finding this cache as I did making it!

A FEW NOTES:

  • The log book has been replaced on 07/28/02 with a Geocaching Official Rite In the Rain Logbook.

  • On 09/25/02 I replaced the plug with a softer rubber version, I hope this will stop the water infiltration problem.

  • The anchor can be very hard to see without the cache in place, (depending on water conditions) make sure you use something to help you find it when replacing the cache.

  • I added a four way driveway reflector next to the cache, it is about the same height as the cache.

  • To be on the safe side, only put things in the cache that water will not affect. (Batteries are a bad idea) I'm going to assume the cache WILL leak some water.
