Developed in the 1600's, the Cello or Violoncello, is a 4 stringed instrument, tuned to A , D , G ,and C (2 below middle C). It is larger than the viola and violin, and is played resting upon the floor aided with a peg or short spike. Due to it's low range, the Cello part in most symphonies contributes to the harmony. In terms of sound, the Cello produces a sound that is the closest to the Human voice of all natural orchestral instruments.
The sound is produced by the friction created by the bow being drawn across the required string. The pitch of the string is controlled by pressing the string down upon the neck at the appropriate length. As with most string instruments, there is no indicator the length of the string for the particular key, although student instruments often have markings on the edge of the neck.
