A double reed woodwind, the Oboe is a popular participant in any orchestra. An Oboe is a bored out piece of wood with a series of holes and a mechanical method of stopping chosen holes in order to adjust the sound. The oboe ranges from B flat to G three octaves higher, but sound texture is produced by the skill of the lip position and air supplied by the player.
The concert A used to tune an orchestra is produced by the Oboe. The reason the Oboe carries this honour is because in order to make slight adjustments to produce the sound the conductor needs, the Oboe is the only instrument that requires the reed to be cut accordingly. There is no fine adjustment on the Oboe.
The sound chamber has a conical bore which results in the sound coming from the instrument having a greater intensity, and to the listener being able to hear the Oboe through the even louder other instruments.

Of course, this quality has led some to believe that the sound of the Oboe is what a Duck would sound like if it were a songbird.
