An esker is a ridge of sand and gravel that has most likely been formed by a stream that flowed under a glacier. Of the three parallel trail branches in Pine Park, this trail runs highest, along the ridgeline of this esker. The cache is off the trail, and a small amount of uphill bushwhacking is required. The hike is otherwise any easy one, and great for kids and dogs too. Make a loop out of it by taking one of the other trails back. The one along the Connecticut River is the most popular. This is an excellent place to ski and snowshoe in the winter.
A note on parking at Occom Pond in the summer: There are lots of parking spaces, but most of them belong to the golf course and are clearly marked as such (HCC=Hanover Country Club). There is a small parking area for about 5 cars immediately beyond the HCC parking. Parking along the road a bit further is fine too, beyond the no parking signs.
An alternate way to access this cache is to walk across the golf course from the parking area on Reservoir Road. This approach is best in the off season, but access is permitted year-round as long as you stay on the path and yield to golfers.
This cache was created and hidden with the help of 6-year-old ASP.
