Mountainside Clue Hunt Virtual Cache

This cache has been archived.

erik88l-r: Cache archived at the request of park management:

Please archive these caches on Maui. They are all vacation caches, and don't reflect current park cache conditions.

The National Park they are in does have occasional road closures. In fact, road construction is occurring right now for the next few months, with delays expected and area closures, but the cache info. does not reflect that.

Regretfully this is why the rules prohibiting "vacation caches" have had to be amended since this cache was approved to include virtual caches. Access to locations change over time, and a local presence is required to act as needed to prevent people going where they shouldn't.

Thanks for the past fun.

Geocache Description:

Virtual caches seem to me to be perfect for travelers, there's no need for geo-trinkets and they give you a chance to learn more about the landscape and history of the world around you. And even locals can learn more about their homes by visiting site nearby they might otherwise rush by.

High up on Haleakala sits the location of this virtual cache and the answers to these questions -

1) What Hawaiian native's story is told here? (look for the words, "The story of...")
2) What's the translation of 'Ahinahina'
3) Many species of long-horned beetles have evolved on the Hawaiian Islands - which one is found only on these slopes?

That's three pieces of information. Stop at this location for these answers and learn more about the fascinating ecology of this region. You'll have to look around carefully, all the answers are here, they're just a bit scattered.

As always, don't reveal your answers here in your log, I'll confirm your response after you email me. If possible, use this link to send the email. Just remember to replace the # (Or use the Contact link on my profile, above)

Remember, the reward is in the hunt and in your surroundings.

The map location here doesn't seem very accurate. I double checked it with the mapping feature at LostOutdoors.Com and confirmed the spot.
