Accesed from the Mt. Tom Reservation (from either the Rt. 141 or Rt. 5 gate), you will find parking and a great vista at N42°16.763' / W072°37.299'. Follow the trails around the summit to the ruins of the Eryie House (N42°16.752' / W072°37.217') on the east side of the mountain. The ruins are the old foundations of a spectacular summit house built in 1861 by William Street. It was the second of three summit houses built along the Mt. Tom and Holyoke Ranges. The first summit house, the Mt. Holyoke Hotel, located across the river to the north, was built in 1851 and still stands today. The last, the Mt. Tom Summit House (where I have also placed a geocache), located to the south, was built in 1897.
The cache might be considered an "historical" cache since it contains three histories of the Eyrie House from local newspaper articles dated 1960, 1970 and 1991 and some archival pictures. Please note that care has been taken to locate the Ammo Can cache a sufficient distance from the ruins to prevent any disturbance of the site.
In the cache you will find the Eyrie House history and some interesting pictures. Please leave the histories/pictures in the cache for the next visitor. If you would like a copy of these materials, please contact me and I will arrange to have copies sent to you. Also, if you have any additional information about the Eyrie House (or know someone who does) please contact me so that I might include the additional information.
Take some time to hike around the area. There are some wonderful views, beautiful wildflowers (Rock Harlequin and Red Columbine) and soaring hawks. As NEOC1 has pointed out, there are also ruins of a never-completed cable car station house at N42°16.814' / W072°37.231' that are worth exploring. You will pass by the cable station house on the right as you walk up the trail to the summit. Also, you should be able to trace the route of a 1/4 mile bicycle path that encircled the Mt. Nonouck summit. Please be careful by the ruins as some of the rock can be easily disturbed. Have fun!
