Geocache Description:

Asabikeshiinh:

That's what they were originally called.

After a lengthy expedition, we were able to track down the original roots of what are now known as dream-catchers. It turns out that the dream-catcher was originated in the Ojibwe tribe located in an area known as Turtle Island.

Village children began complaining of nightmares, so vivid they swore they were real. A woman named Asibikaashi (Spider Woman) began creating dream-catchers to protect the youth of the tribe. The dream-catchers would literally filter out the bad dreams, but allow the good ones through a small hole in the center of the structure.

Every dream-catcher was unique. The Spider Woman used vines, seeds, berries, feathers, and animal bone. Pretty much anything she could muster up in the country side could be added to make each one a unique piece of art.

After visiting several museums, and speaking with several people of Ojibwe origin, I was given a photo of one of these ancient dream-catcher, and uploaded it for you all to see.
