Located on one of the oldest church sites in the United States, the current Eliot Church was founded in 1828. The original buidling and congregation, however, date from 1651. First established by John Eliot as a mission church to the Native American population, that original congregation ordained the first (and only) Native American to be fully recognized as a pastor by the early Puritans. The cache is named after this preacher and pastor, Daniel Takawambpait.
Over the centuries the congregation experienced a number of divisions and re-formations to the extent that today there are three congregations that claim the original church as one of it's ancestors. The Eliot Church is currently affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association and the Unted Church of Christ. Another congregation, the Natick Praying Indians, meets at the site monthly. The third congregation meets downtown.
There is street parking on Eliot Street (Route 16) or behind the library and next to the river...
