From Hell Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Darth Leviosa: Archiving a set of caches which includes this one. Sadly, the small puzzle community is not very active anymore, so there's no real point in keeping these around. My thanks and kudos to those who put in the time to solve the puzzles and find the caches. I hope you had a memorable experience.

Geocache Description:

NOTE: THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES!

From Hell is a 2001 film directed by the Hughes Brothers about the infamous Jack the Ripper and his actions in the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. It is loosely based on a graphic novel of the same name by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell. Both the film and the novel take their name from one of the letters purportedly written by Jack the Ripper himself.

The letter was written to George Lusk, the head of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee, and addressed "From Hell." Lusk received the letter on October 16, 1888. It was accompanied by a grisly package which seemed to authenticate the letter. Unlike some of the other correspondence allegedly from Jack the Ripper, this one was not signed with his self-given nickname. While photographs of the front of the letter exist, the original has been lost.

No known photographs exist of the back of the letter, but notes from the Scotland Yard detectives recorded the mysterious numbers that were scrawled in the same hand as the letter on the front:
9-97, 6-68, 4-48, 8-14, 7-76, 2-57, 3-43, 1-91, 5-24, 1-69, 8-93, 2-71, 3-44, 5-79, 9-98, 5-32, 7-12, 4-48, 6-43, 5-96, 9-72, 8-17, 2-84, 3-86, 1-19, 6-24, 4-62, 7-59, 2-13, 1-22, 8-85
Like most of the evidence surrounding the crimes, nothing is certain. Did Jack the Ripper really write this letter? How many victims did he have? No one is certain and speculation abounds. Books on the subject are written to this day naming potential suspects. Those interested in the case can take bus tours of Whitechapel. A multitude of websites exist where amateur sleuths share their theories and exchange information. All these years later, Saucy Jack still has a grip on the public's imagination.
