Geocache Description:

Come and explore a new trail on conserved land. You will be climbing up for about a mile on a gentle trail. The cache is a camoued racquet ball container, bout 30 feet off the trail, and is winter friendly.

Parking: Alongside Hurricane Mt. Rd, before the gate, near the water tower. Look at the coordinates for The Gate GC68Z3D which is not far beyond the area to park.

The Trailhead: Cross over the river (around or over the cable). Continue to the huge water tower. Walk about half way around the tower, looking for a trail sign "Red Tail Trail", high up on a tree.

The Terrain: The trail starts along a lovely stream, passing some sort of holding pond, crossing over a bike bridge, all the while paralleling Hurricane Mountain Road. In the winter, you will not even notice the road, as it is closed to vehicles. As the trail turns away from the stream, you will climb through a couple of old clear cuts. The second one has magnificent mountain views. But, the cache is hidden before the second cut, in a lovely hemlock forest.

Beyond the cache?:  Yes, keep hiking, the view within the second clear cut is well worth it. I have included a map in with the photos. I decided to continute to Black Cap Connector Trail, turn left to continue up the mountain, so I could get the "Black Cap Connector" geocache. Then I backtracked, continuing on Black Cap Connector to try and find the Kettle Ridge Trail. That was less successful. I saw where the trailhead should be, but it was not marked and not tracked. So, I continuted to the road at the tower, then bushwhacked (following human tracks) to the right (NE) to reach the nearby switchbacks of the Kettle Ridge Trail. I did quickly reach a tramped trail and I did follow it downhill. But, it was eroded and more difficult than the Red Tail Trail and I ended up on roads withing condominiums and 0.75 mile from my car! At this point I turned the GPS back on and wound through the roads, cut through a yard, and finally ended up at the water tower. So....

Recommendation: Continue past the cache, and perhaps even go all the way to Black Cap (lovely views), but eventually return via the Red Tail Trail.

Thanks: Two groups are responsible for this trail. The Upper Saco Valley Land Trust owns an easement, preserving this land. The New England Mountain Bike Association made and maintains the trail. Thank you to both! Congratulations to T.in.W for FTF
