Geocache Description:

A morning kickoff event in Vancouver, and a final evening wrap-up event in the Portland area (GC6C1Q2). Newsflash! Ohio Geocaching OHGeo is joining us with events on the same day! (GC6FFX3 and GC6FFXE)

Kickoff event: Fort Vancouver Visitor Center picnic shelter, Saturday, May 7, 9-10:30 am.

Easy directions:
From I-5 in Vancouver, take exit 1C Mill Plain east
Turn right on Fort Vancouver Way
At the STOP sign roundabout, head east to the Visitor Center parking lot.

It's springtime -- time to get your geocaches ready for their summer visitors! Geocaching is much more fun when the containers are in good shape and well-stocked. Do you remember the fun you had when you found your first well-maintained caches? You've spent time creating and placing caches, and hopefully they've withstood the elements - why not give them a visit and get them ready for summer?

What you'll get at this kickoff event:
  • Peer motivation!
  • Cache maintenance supplies
  • Snacks
  • Guidelines for maintaining geocaches
  • An event smilie
So far we have donations of supplies and goodies from:

What to bring:
  • Your own cache maintenance supplies, like replacement logs and containers, pens, gloves, rags, swag, baggies, plant clippers and extraction tools, CITO bags, GPS receiver, hand sanitizer.
Then what do I do?
  • Go forth into the world and perform cache maintenance! (see checklist below)
What if I don't own any geocaches?
  • There's plenty you can do to help maintain geocaches you do not own. You can dry the container, add swag and replace baggies, add an additional log sheet or a pen, and CITO the area. Just be sure not to move or replace the container without the cache owner's permission. If someone else's cache needs to be moved or replaced, send an email or geocaching.com message to the cache owner, and/or log a "Needs Maintenance" on the cache page.
What do do at the end of the day:
  • At the final event this evening: (http://coord.info/GC6C1Q2) hosted by GEOregon, bring back your stories of what you found and accomplished. We'll have prizes and provide time to brag about what you did!

Interested in winning even more fabulous prizes? [Hint: one prize is worth $50....] During the entire day May 7th from the start of the morning event to the beginning of the afternoon event, there are opportunities to post a photo of your cache maintenance adventures as you visit caches today. Careful not to post spoilers! See someone at the sign in table at the MORNING EVENT (GC6BGH7) for a description of what to do and how to do it [one way: Email the photos to mmphotos2016@gmail.com]. All photos posted correctly will be eligible for winning some special prizes. We'd love to see what you have done!
We know you cannot visit all of your caches today, but even if you only visit a few, your fellow cachers will have a much better time visiting them after they are spruced up! And don't forget CITO!! No one wants to walk over trash to find your cache!

Cache maintenance checklist (be prepared!):
  • Cracked lids
  • Rusted containers
  • No swag
  • Inappropriate swag
  • Full or soaking wet logs
  • Torn baggies
  • Wet containers
  • Wet contents
  • Caches where the cache owner needs to check that the location is correct or still appropriate, or that the container is still there (non-cache-owners should simply log a "needs maintenance" on these, stating the reason)
  • Bison tubes that need new washers
  • Sites that desperately need cleanup
  • Containers in need of glue or magnets
