Geocache Description:

While up on this little historic plateau finding the other two caches, we found this nice little spot and thought there should be another reason to come up here.

DON’T bushwhack up from the parking spot! Please use the trail. Park at the new small lot off Old Bernardston Rd, read the 1930 plaque, and the info at the new kiosk, then head up the road about 100 feet to the Trailhead. A short, not too steep, uphill will lead you to follow the easy white-blazed trail around the perimeter of King Philip’s lookout point.

From up here it’s easy to see why this was such a good vantage point to watch over the river for potential enemies. King Philip was leader of the Wampanoag tribe, and camped up on this plateau in the winter of 1674-1675. Near this cache, you can still see the defense trenches built 340 years ago in the war with the colonists in nearby Deerfield and Northfield.

We are not so sure King Philip built the picnic table that’s here, but it’s a good spot to sit and contemplate the amazing history, and have a little snack.

Congratulations Thiayack on the FTF, and thanks for the lovely sunrise photo!
